Beginner Concert Band

TUESDAYS 3:30p-5:30p

Prerequisites:  No musical experience necessary.

Class Description:  Students will choose a wind or percussion instrument to focus on in this introductory band class.  In sectional rehearsals, students will learn the basic techniques required to play selections from the elementary band repertoire.  In the process, the young musicians will learn to read standard music notation.  Beginner band performs in the YAA annual winter and spring concerts.  This band meets for two hours a week.

Student responsibilities:  15-20 of instrumental practice daily.  The YAA requires appropriate behavior in the band class.  Respect for the teaching staff and other musician’s is a must.

Intermediate / Honor Concert Band

Intermediate Concert Band:

THURSDAYS 3:30p-5:30p

Honor Concert Band:. 

FRIDAYS 5:00p-6:00p

Prerequisites: Students are required 1-2 years of experience on their chosen instrument.  A basic knowledge of reading standard music notation is mandatory.   

Class Description:  The musical selections in our honor and intermediate bands are decidedly more difficult and involved than those of beginner band.  These bands will challenge the young instrumentalists to expand their rhythmic, harmonic, and dynamic vocabularies.  Less time should be spent in class explaining fingerings and counting than in beginner band.  Intermediate and Honor bands perform in the YAA annual winter and spring concerts. This band meets for two hours a week.

Student responsibilities:  20 minutes of instrumental practice daily.  The YAA requires appropriate behavior in the band class.  As the students have now been on their instruments for a good deal of time, it is suggested that private lessons be considered.

All*Star Concert Band

FRIDAYS 6:00p-7:00p

Prerequisites:  Students are required 3 + years of experience on their chosen instrument.  An advanced knowledge of reading standard music notation is mandatory.  If you have not already been a member of the YAA All*Star Band, an audition is mandatory.  The audition requires knowledge of major scales, a prepared piece of the students choice and sight reading.

Class Description:  All*Star Band is the highest level of concert band offered at the YAA.  The music selections in the past have often been as advanced as the music performed at the high school level.  All*Star band perform in the YAA annual winter and spring concerts.  This band meets for one hour a week.

Student responsibilities:  30 minutes of instrumental practice daily.  The YAA requires appropriate behavior in the band class.  As the students have now been on their instruments for a good deal of time, it is suggested that private lessons be considered.
